My father-in-law is likely to go into a nursing home soon His savings will not last long and MIL lives in their home. How much will the local authority be willing to pay towards his care. It all seems so complicated..............

It varies from LA to LA. In my own family members area, the LA would pay less than £500pw. Their room cost £705 per week. The option was to find the funds for a top up fee of £200 pw or have him moved to the LA owned home 8 miles from his frail elderly wife.
I can never understand people who say they will deliberately spend all their money/ find ways to give it away to their children so the council can't 'take their house'. I'd want every penny I could find to be able to choose my own care home, not have it chosen for me.

It does all feel very complicated when you enter this world: you just learn through experience. Once your f in l's savings fall below £23,000 get the LA to give him a financial assessment. A SW will also need to assess him to see if they agree he needs nursing home care. The LA will then tell you what they are prepared to pay. Also, look up Age UK's website, it is very good.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I've done a bit of reading and Birmingham City Council applies a deferred payment scheme. I think this means that they have a charge against your home when you die.

So what happens when you jointly own your home with your wife. When the husband dies does the wife have to sell the house to pay the owed fees ? .........or do the Council wait until the wife dies as well and then takes their cut out of the half share of the house when its sold. Should add that mirrored wills have has been in place for several years leaving the house to the remaining spouse, don't suppose it makes any difference.

I'm assuming that you may as well be considered as fully funding as you will end up paying, after you've died, as long as the capital in your share of your home is big enough.

The value of the property will not be counted in his financial assessment while his wife still lives there so there won't be a charge on the house.
