Where can I find a list of care home fees?

I'm looking on local care home websites and none of them say how much they cost. Is this normal?

I *think* my Mum got a booklet from the local authority and that listed all the care homes in the area and the ones suitable for my Nan, who has dementia. Nan went from her home to hospital to an assessment centre, where she was declared not well enough to return home. I believe she was given the booklet as part of a meeting to discuss Nan's future. Prior to this my Mum had seen a home she would have looked Nan to go in but the people attending the meeting explained to her about third part top up fees and my parents couldn't afford to fund this. The booklet might have had the charges in there, I can't remember but if it did it said between x and y price rather than specifics.
  • The fees can be based on a single room with en suite loo & shower/bath and a view of a garden.... or a shared room on the third floor with a view of the sky through the small window.... ;)

So they do often vary within the home according to the facilities offered, and the level of care needed.

A personal visit can elicit that information, and give you an initial feel for the place. Or a phone call for more in-depth information. Turn up with no appointment to look round - anywhere that doesn't welcome you should be avoided! An thorough inspection might not be possible if there aren't staff available, but it gives you a chance to assess immediately if you are happy with what you see (or smell  !) You can have a meeting with the manager later if you like the place.

We found homes very reluctant to give out prices on the phone.

We ended up making a short list based on the kind of care offered, locality, personal recommendation, etc, and visited them.

That's because generally most of them don't have a set fee, the cost will vary from resident to resident based on a number of factors. You'll negotiate the fee when arranging the placement.

This is of course assuming they'll be self funding with no involvement from social services what so ever. The rules are a little different for them.

Also, the price will be different if a short term respite care rather than permanent residency.

The Honefinding Team at your local social services (Elderly and Disabled Team) should have a list.

However, bear in mind that you generally only find out the exact cost, when it comes to it. It depends on the needs of the elderly person, and area.

My Dads home (London suburb) costs £1600 per week, for nursing care, but he has got complex needs.

Straight residential homes, around here, were quoted at about £1100 per week.

They can cost up to £3000 per week, but they are 5*

Local authorities pay less, so private funders have to pay more.

Having said that, a lot are shutting down, and very few had vacancies anyway.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

As others have said there are so many variables - nursing or residential, ensuite or not, location and private/local authority funded.

My mother in law is in a residential home close by and the fees are between £700 - £950 per week depending on the room. Her room is £800 because the bedroom is small but she has a large ensuite wet room. They've just built a dementia unit next door and one of the carers told me it is £1200 per week there.

Our friend's dad was in a local nursing home for terminal care but was local authority funded and his care was £670 per week. So very variable!

My father-in-law is likely to go into a nursing home soon His savings will not last long and MIL lives in their home. How much will the local authority be willing to pay towards his care. It all seems so complicated..............
