Did you get your deposit back? Did you receive the proscribed information in time when you first took on the tenancy?

Some things are best left to avoid further stress. You are no longer in the property. You were not in the right to pay for a funeral, however blunt that sounds, you could have negotiated with the funeral director not allow yourselves (especially a pregnant woman) to be jeopardising your home.

It still isn't clear what you thought the council would do. Was there heating at the property? Hot water? Or was it all electric? (Very unusual.)

You have to be able to prove to the court that you didn't cut the supply and your landlord did it. So if your landlord presents something along the lines of "I am a landlord of ten years experience, with 14 properties in my portfolio. Happy tenants all around, I made the mistake of taking on two tenants who not only went into arrears, they didn't try to pay even a token payment and then seemingly deliberately cut their electric supply in an attempt to make it appear my property was uninhabitable". Suited and booted before a judge, versus yourselves with "oh I was pregnant staying in a cheapo b&b that cost us £1500..." Who do you really think the judge is going to believe?

Sometimes you just need to cut your losses and move on xxx
