We once took in a stray dog and informed the police and then the pound;the latter agreeing to his staying with us as our son knew the pound manager.

The police said that,if the owners came forward we should tell them that there were expenses to pay ( transport to police station, food, worming, as we had children , etc).

Via the pound the owners did turn up, but the possibility of having to pay out deterred them from wanting the dog back and they signed him over to us.

Perhaps this, with a suggestion that neglect has been logged by your vet, will put these woman off.

You answered an ad that had been running for a month; you paid for and collected the dog from (as far as you are concerned) the dog's owner. You obtained copies of the dog's vet records from its previous vet, and confirmed the man's ownership (as far as you're concerned) of the dog. Done deal.

Then some randomer contacts you with a big sob story but nothing to back it up.

Why on earth would you believe her? Why would you entertain her for a second?

    Let her whistle.

Thank you for all your advice everyone. I'm going to get a copy of the vets report tonight and I'm also going to ring one of our local rescue charities tomorrow to see if they have any ideas.

Sure enough the guy text me yesterday morning asking for the dog back because his ex has told him that she wants it now. She's had months to get the dog while he's been looking after it, it's only now that she's seen pictures on my Facebook of the dog looking happy that she wants the dog back.
I haven't replied to his text because I wouldn't be able to keep it PC. Both blocked on FB and I'm entering into no more conversation with them. Hopefully they will just go away now, wish me luck!

Court generally consider the owner to be the person registered as owne rwith the vet and who pays for feeding the animal.

That would seem to be the man.

While this may be accurate in a civil case (it's rarely that cut and dry - who paid, how long ago, and if the animal was 'gifted' also come into play), this is poor advice should there be a judicial case and the animal found to be 'stolen property' - which is generally always returned to the lawful owner without recompense due to the purchaser.

But, as has been stated, I think a legal case is unlikely... unless the GF want's her Ex to face criminal charges.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I did say 'generally' but that was a statement , not advice.

The only advice I gave was to contact Doglaw.
