Neighbour control over what's in our garden ?

Thanks all - a new day and the world looks a brighter place.
A couple of good ideas on here - some short term (dandelion seeds) and some longer term (the hedge finger) but reality is it will be a grown up discussion with a fairly curt message of 'leave our plants alone' (anything approaching his fence/garden is already trimmed by us) and 'keep your opinions to yourself'
Following that we'll increase the height of the lower fence panels on our side to 6ft - this'll both keep him out of our faces and obscure the pleasant view of the village he currently has from his vantage point in living room - maybe if we spray his side of our fence panel a nice shade of pink (or other bright colour) he might realise his lot isn't such a bad one0 -
He sounds like a right old grump! I could understand it if you were planting a leylandii hedge but lilacs are lovely! We had one in our old garden that had unfortunately grown to hang over the other side of our wall over a public footpath so we didn't get the benefit of it.
There's nothing he can do about it anyway, high hedge legislation only covers high hedges funnily enough and I doubt it's easily enforceable.0 -
I'd just find a way to block his view of the garden, legally, and leave him to it. Some people have far too much time on their hands.
If he's not being constructive, he's not being useful. Therefore he's surplus to requirements.0 -
Pyracantha mixed in the hedge. Good for wildlife and darn prickly?
You could ask if he's willing to help with the hard graft and put his hand in his pocket to pay out for it to be "done to his standards"?0 -
Hi,
The other option if you do not want to challenge him is to 'out nice' him. This is where you are so very nice. To do this you also have to 'out talk' him too.
So he comes around and complains about the lilac bush. You then talk, without stopping, at him about the lilac bush do not let him talk and talk over him if need be. Turn the subject of the lilac bush into what you want to talk about. e.g
Annoying neighbour "I do not want that lilac bush planted there etc"
You "It is so nice isn't it lilac is one of my favourites, such a nice colour and perfume. It love the shape of the flowers and this plant is from my aunt, much treasured. It looks great in this bored...and so on..
Just keep whittering on and then end with "Thanks for calling round, but I am very busy and must carry on" Then walk him off the property whilst still taking at him with a big smile on your face.
You cannot argue with him as he is just odd and will not listen anyway. So every time he comes over just do the overly jolly, slight bonkers continuous talking and talk about the same subject as him, but in a different way. Always make it a one-sided conversation.
Do this until you get the screening in place.0 -
I wouldn't say anything to him. In case you ever want to sell, you don't want to have to declare a neighbour dispute. I'd just build your wall or put up a higher fence on your side of the garden. Then your wife can garden in peace without having her ear bent.0

Personally I'd "polity" tell him to go !!!! himself. If the plant(s) are in your garden, don't overhang his garden and are not invasive such as Japanese knot-weed, hes got no legal grounds, grow high, grow wide, if he encroaches on your garden, file a formal complaint for criminal damage for coming over the boundary line.0
