Yes you can have multiple networks on the same line. I know it works for 85Mbps and 200Mbps adapters plugged on the same line.

Thanks - that sounds promising. Now I'm wondering whether I should deliberately buy a different brand of Homeplugs for the 2nd network, so that the traffic doesn't end up on the wrong network.

I just have a quick question regarding these. I basically have a 12meg line and was wondering if I should buy the 200Mbps adapter or the 85Mbps. Just so you know I dont really use the network for transferring files and stuff its just to surf the internet and download stuff.

    Thanks

  • I run 4 of the 85 homeplugs from two manufacturers (solwise and econnect) however both sets use the same software and are fully compatible with each other.

a set of 14s would be fine for general web surfing etc. but the 85s would be a better purchase for potential future use.

the 200s are quite pricey atm and not worth the extra unless you are going to stream hd files over the network. My 85s work fine for two xboxs streaming off a main server around the house for sd.
  • Unfortunately I rang Cheltenham branch and they dont have any. If anyone has access to a maplin with stock and you dont mind posting them on I would gladly pay cost plus postage. Otherwise if anyone spots stock in the region, please let me know, thanks Tim

Speed isn't an issue for you. The 14Mbps is enough if it's just for basic surfing and file transfers. If you want to stream videos across the network, then go for 85Mbps and if you want to stream HD content then go for 200Mbps
  • I'm not sure anyone's mentioned the Devolo dLan 200 AV yet, so I thought I'd give it a, er, plug. This seems to me to be the Rolls-Royce of HomePlug networking products at the moment, and if you want the simplest-to-use, best designed and most future-proof product out there, it appears to be the best on the market. As jordy32 correctly says above, 200Mb systems are a bit overspecified for most domestic users, but like all this sort of stuff, they probably won't seem that way in a year or two's time. At £130 for a two-plug starter kit, they come with a heavy price tag too, which might make them inappropriate for a money savers' forum! But - and here's the Money Saving Tip - you could always do what I do with upmarket technical purchases like this, and that's to write a review with an affiliate link and make the money back that way (it normally works, and enables me to go for pricier options when buying new kit). I think it's a morally sound approach if you really do recommend the product.

It doesn't necessarily need to be Devolo, all other makes do the same work and perform as well. Also remember that if you go the 200Mbps route, you can't add 85Mbps and 14Mbps plugs to the same network.
