Network over the mains starter pack £24.93

If you have a wireless network at home but have a device which is not wireless (in my case a hd-dvd player but another example is the xbox360) then you either need to have cables trailing to wherever your broadband modem/router is located or buy a wireless bridge (these start at about £40 - the dedicated MS item for the 360 is more expensive). I came across another solution making use of a clearance item at maplin, code is A96FZ but doesn't appear on their website. The identical item is here for £20.15 (that's per socket - you need at least two) - the maplin kit includes two of these for £24.93 (bought in-store). It is only 14Mbps but suitable for most applications. Bargain!

Just picked up what I think was probably the last pack in C. London

Works very well for two plugs on the same ring main, but not brilliant bridging across to another circuit.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Do you mean it doesn't work well with extension leads, or it doesn't work well well with another circuit of plugs (via the fuse box) ?

  • Absolutely - if you're getting a good wireless signal/speed - this solution is primarily for devices which are not computers.

You'd be looking to use one of these if you had too many walls/ bad wireless signal etc..... Also where you need video streaming or web gaming for a games console (Xbox360 etc.) at a higher and more sustainable rate than is available via wireless.

Been using these for months for laptop and wii. They work really well even when they're not suppiosed to eg across gang sockets and alike.

    Timmay!
  • I've been using these (85Mbps ones) for a while now, I've got rid of all wifi equipment in the house.
These are more secure and provide fast and constant bandwidth across the house.
I use it to connect my Router to the 2 PCs, Laptop, 2 Xbox (each in a different room), Xbox360, Wii and PS3. It works great for playing online and streaming videos via XBMC. If you want to stream HD videos, you'll need the 200Mbps adapters.
Note that you can mix 14Mbps and 85Mbps adapters but not 200Mbps as they use a different technology.

Which ones have you got Totoriko, last time I looked the 85Mbps were expensive. I am thinking of upgraded as Wireless G is too slow for us and there the new routers out that are meant to be much quicker
  • I have one Vesenet(3 port), one Solwise(single port) and 2 eConnect(single port) adapters, all 85Mbps.
I paid about £23.49 incl p&p each for the single port adapters from ShopMagenta in March this year.

The main reasons why I moved from Wifi are for security and speed.
