Apologies if this has been covered - I've checked all thread titles back to mid March and couldn't see anything obvious.

I only have a paper licence (i.e. way before the plastic and paper counter part).

Will I struggle to collect a car from hiring companies?

I do have time to arrange for a plastic one if needed.

Judging by my own experience you will have no problem. The old paper licence is still valid and accepted by rental firms in Europe and elsewhere as proof of legal entitlement to drive. It has the advantage of not requiring the ridiculous DVLA check code to provide that proof, which the modern photo card license theoretically needs.

Many thanks for your response eD.

I hadn't picked up on this extra benefit too.

DH has the paper licence and not had trouble hiring in Spain.

Regarding the code, he had to get one to hire in this country.

I hired a car last week in Spain using my paper driving licence; not a murmur of a problem. Certainly no need for DVLA codes, indeed the broker I used (Carjet) states clearly that these will be required only for a UK hire.
