A friend and his family have two flights booked from UK to Detroit.

Cheapest in June was UK to US and an internal flight.

Cheapest in September was UK to Amsterdam then a direct flight.

Detroit is in the US -presumably you mean another US gateway and then an internal flight - If these are on seperate tickets there will be baggage charges on the internal flight.

I'm visiting Michigan next week and my destination is exactly halfway between Chicago and Detroit with a good Amtrak connection from both- I found there were more and cheaper options to Chicago -and the rail route runs Chicago to Detroit so if the OP's ultimate destination isn't Detroit itself this may be useful.

I found cheap flights from Gothenburg with a Ryanair flight to get me there- even with baggage was a better saving than Dublin too.

There's a lot of scaremongering about not flying the last leg - I don't think the risk is significant for a one off . The airlines big concern will be business travellers flying the routes monthly or more -as that is a significant loss of revenue -although arguably they are less likely to have checked luggage so if the airlines really went all out to stop it they'd not allow short checking of baggage AND hit the frequent traveller on the frequent flyer miles/status front.I have short checked bags in the past but now the airlines are taking more notice I tend to stick to hand bagage only if I want to drop the last leg . I can pack for a week with hand baggage only nowadays with a bit of effort .

Cheapest seems to be using airtransat into Toronto. Obviously you'd need to hire a car/get a bus, but it's not that far.

I'll have a look for the link.

    Here's the link http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1759465-ex-eu-lhr-lgw-can-i-still-drop-last-leg-3.html

Seems the main risk is booking by TA

Still a lot of "BA might do this" and no personal experience.

There was a case a while back where a TA was coshed by BA for providing such tickets.
But this amounted to 100's of such tickets from this one source was pretty obvious.

Easy for BA to do and they have a hold over TA's as they allow them to sell tickets.

I'm sure if you dropped the last leg of such route VERY frequently BA may do something-But up to press they have not.

Well you have to wait 'till it stops :D

The trick is what to do with your hold luggage.

You, physically, can get off the 'plane at LHR and of course not get on the next one to DUB (or wherever)

So,what do you do with the hold luggage ?

    1. Easiest option-
Do not have any-May be a struggle for some people on a 3 week USA tour.
But if you're in Business class the cabin allowance is quite good.;)

    2. Have the connecting flight (last leg LHR to DUB) either
    (i) Next day-They "should" allow hold luggage off with you at LHR
(ii) Going from a different airport.
    Viz USA-LGW then LHR-DUB
Your luggage HAS to be off loaded for you to take to the other airport.

    3. Ask at USA check -in for the luggage to be short loaded to the first stop (LHR) Get a picky check-in agent and it will not be done!

    Simples

I've usually made sure I've had a very long "wait" between flights at Heathrow or Gatwick (theoretically that last flight can be up to 24 hours later -) -so I have a good reason to "need" my luggage fo r a change of clothes/shower etc.

Another way to do it which doesn't save quite as much but still has a significant saving is to book an open jaw -eg Out Dublin to New York return New York to London -so no need to short check.

OP, what's your idea of 'cheap', how critical is time to you and where in the UK are you hoping to fly from ?
i.e are you looking for £250 return and your're happy to take 2 days and 4 connections to get there and back
