To claim tax credits they'd need your children's names and DOB, they can't get that from self assessment.
Ask them what account th money was paid to, you may need to contact the police if you didn't apply and the money wasn't paid to you, could be identity fraud.0 -

They could have got my children's names from child benefit claim, money was paid to me hence I need to re-pay it.0 -
Last claimed around 2007, stopped it due to my earnings. That was hard work then.pmlindyloo wrote: »Did you previously claim tax credits in the years before?0 -

I'm sorry but it doesn't work like that. A claim can only be made by completing the application form.
Not everyone can claim tax credits so child benefit don't pass on the information.
However you've now said you did apply in the past. It's possible your claim has always remained active and you just didn't get payments due to your earnings.
Something just have triggered payments to restart at some point last year. They would have sent an award notice at some point last year of payments were made.0 -
When did they start paying CTC?
If it was after your wife died could you have filled on a form when applying for Widowed Parents Allowance etc.
Sometimes everything is covered in one go.0 -

This sounds like the logical explanation, but does logical work with the tax office. I did fill out a bereavement benefit package too.0
