Ryanair travel credit - not much use to me now!

Hi everyone, not sure if this is possible but I thought it easier to ask on here than attempt to get some sense out of Ryanair!
We were due to fly this week but due to o/h having a very unexpected emergency surgery the trip has had to be cancelled.
The surgeon told him not to fly for 4 weeks so I contacted Ryanair and within less than a day (!) they replied telling me they had given me a travel credit.
This is all very lovely of them and I was very surprised I got such a quick response but we aren't in a position to be going away again any time soon and the credit is only valid for a year.
I just wondered if it's even worth the hassle of trying to contact them to see if they could give me a proper refund instead? I do have travel insurance but they told me to try Ryanair first, which is not something I'm looking forward to trying to do..
If anyone has any tips or thoughts I'd be most grateful. I'm not sure of their policies and googling has left me very confused!
Thanks in advance

I think they've already been far more generous than they need to be.
Find an excuse to use what they've given you.0 -
Ryanair have offered you far more than they have to.
Your insurance company are the ones fobbing you off. This situation is exactly what travel insurance is for.0 -

Or, as the insurer seems to have indicated they could be covered, ask the insurer what they'd reimburse after the excess and decide whether they want a reduced amount of cash or a travel credit they have no intention of using (I'm assuming it's non transferable?).0 -
Thanks everyone, I was very surprised by Ryanair's response but I will contact the insurers again!0
