Relocating bath & basin waste to under floorboards

Refitting a bathroom at the moment and the waste for both bath and basin is above ground. Its some sort of solid heavy material, possibly iron?

The waste's both link back into the soil stack to the right.

I have asked the bathroom fitter to move the wastes to below the floorboard, be he advises not to as its a messy and time consuming job, and also something about waste heights relative to soil stack. He suggests boxing them in instead, but i dont think this is the most aesthetically pleasing solution, ideally i want them hidden under floorboards.

Is it difficult to chop them to the soil stack and plumb in new pvc wastes to the existing stack, as well as cap off the holes to which the existing wastes are running to.

The ideal solution would be for the waste pipes to run under the floorboards and up to the sink and bath?

What would be involved in doing this, and roughly how much time would it take one person to do.

Many thanks, look forward to replies.

    That's copper tube

Chances are the stack is cast iron

The stack is in the boxing shown, you would need to cut a new branch lower, do you have access below as I doubt you would get in with a disc cutter or cast wheel cutters to get a new branch in

A new cast branch with clamps is £100 each, labour would be circa 2-4 hrs to fit

Thanks, that's a very helpful reply and gives me a better picture about whats going on.

We could get access by lifting the floorboards to see the stack, could not get access from below as the ceiling has just been skimmed.

Would it need 2 new cast branches, as in one each for basin and bath waste, hence making it around 200 for materials? Then maybe another £100 or so for labour. It seems like it's more expensive to resolve than I thought, maybe we should get it boxed in.

I love to see great big pipes like this on view. It gives the bathroom an old fashioned feel I think. My view? Keep them as they are without boxing. :)

Yes separate branches should be used for each connection

Your dri- lining plasterboard shouldn't be sat directly on floor, should have a 12mm gap at the bottom. I do hope that wall where taken back to brick and not simpy over boarded

Unfortunately you’ve not posted some vital info e.g fist floor, basement, ground etc it could be on ground floor with 3 feet underneath info is key? You need establish what, where the pipe/stack is material, if there is space etc

Don’t guess or speculate lift a few floor boards and remove some of the boxing around the “Stack ? ” You can then see and not guess takes minutes and if fitter hasn’t then either there lazy or doesn’t know what to do ( more often ) Something’s odd as toilet pipe appears to be plastic or is it cast painted white?

Personally, I would remove top basin waste and block up at stack.

Put basin waste then vertically straight down behind basin pedestal.
along with hot/cold pipes, all hidden.

Plumber will advise on suitable 40mm trap/waste anti vac to stop syphoning.

Tee into new waste pipe from bath, run tight along back wall on floor and box in to width from wall to back of pedestal, so it fits neatly against tiled box. Tile height one tile.

This gives shelf for bathroom shampoos soaps etc, if tiled to match wall would look neat.

But my opinion only, sure some plumbers on here will advise more correct way.

    What does your plumber recommend?

    Kitchen ceiling... Plastered..isn't it obvious

I've never seen a cast iron pan connector ? That's a plastic pan connector with either a drain connector or staight pan connector to give the height .

Thanks for everyone taking time to reply, really appreciate.

I check the soil pipe this morning. Firstly I could see it downstairs under the kitchen sink corner, and it looks plastic!

So i went upstairs to the bathroom and chipped away a bit of the plasterboard to get a look at the soil pipe, it looks plastic to me...?

Please have a look at the pictures and confirm this if possible.
If it is plastic and has copper wastes running out of it, im thinking this is much simpler to sort out.

Is is a matter of pulling out old copper wastes, capping the holes, and inserting a new waste below floorboards, running to the basin
    and bath.

Is one waste possible running with a junction at the basin and then continuing on to the bath?

    Thanks again

I’ve found in construction its better to base information on fact/ Knowledge than assumption if in doubt further investigation ?

Point in case WRONG with assumption soil stack is cast :rotfl:

I said “ PIPE” appears to be plastic lift floor boards remove etc
How did I know/suspect I could tell you if you really want to know…..

To OP you may well be able to connect into stack underneath floor for some or all of the pipe run ? Depends on clearance, joist directions etc ( looking at direction of floor boards would indicate joist route is not in your favour )I’d suggest asking a decent Plumber not the “bathroom fitter” to look at what you want done e.g pipe work they would be able to tell you if routing is possible unfortunately your fitter is either lazy or lacks sufficient knowledge ? It will be down to aesthetics over cost?

You need to investigate the joists.

The rules on drilling and cutting notches out of joists are quite strict because you are weakening them, don't assume you can cut a large notch or drill a large hole for the pipe.
