Aggressive Microsoft

Last night just before I shut my laptop down and following an update I had another example of a more aggressive microsoft.

A message came up saying following your request your computer will be updated on Sunday 15th May unless I click cancel upgade.

As I have never requested it so I clicked cancel - I wonder how long that lasts?

I would suspect you have unknowingly updated using KB3035583 which has returned as a recommended update even though I hid it!

I thought for a minute Bill Gates was banging on your door demanding payment for Windows 10, aggressive is probably too strong a word for an update prompt.

As recommended above, I'd install GWX Control panel which is a small tool that blocks Windows 10 updates and prevents it from installing while still allowing normal Windows updates to function.

At the moment, Microsoft are claiming they will be stopping the free upgrade offer this year and will be pulling all the nagware to upgrade to Windows 10 which I didn't think would happen (they're a long way off their Windows 10 targets but will be a pleasant surprise if it does.

Well i for one am glad i upgraded to Windows 10. Much better than 8 and virtually identical to 7, except faster. It also freed up a lot if space on my SSD after installing

It is even more annoying that the W10 update has resurfaced given that on my lappy, I have the ubiquitous "searching for updates" and has been for hours and hours. I would be more pleased with MS if they fixed this (as far as I know I did nothing wrong) rather than telling me to upgrade. I realised I hadn't had an update since March (don't use lappy very often) and have tried all the offered fixes (well clearly I haven't tried them all because I still have the problem!) Solutions include manually downloading and installing particular KB's but the first thing that happens is that a dialogue box opens and states "searching for updates on this computer" for hours and hours!!! Doh!

couple of things:-

1. check BITS service is running
2. you can turn off the windows update service manually, especially if you're trying fixes

several threads on here and most of the internet about this issue, many solutions have worked for many people, unfortunately there appears to be no "one fix suits all" for this yet :mad:

BITS is running on Automatic. I have turned off WUAUSERV and trying again but I suspect a restart will be needed. If that fails I shall try to install one of the "fixes" with WUAUSERV turned off.
