What is so wrong with it? You had a debit balance on the 20th March of £89.62. The figures above suggest that you have total charges for the period £462.42 - hence, the total owed of £516.04.

The truth of the matter is that you have been accumulating an energy debt for some time: that is, your monthly payments haven't been covering your usage. Have you been giving the supplier monthly meter readings? If not, you are looking at a catch up bill.

Standing charges are charges applied by suppliers for your supply. These are usually a daily charge and form part of the tariff that you signed up to. The other part of the tariff is the kWH cost.

they upped my DD to £169/month (without telling me) to pay off the arrears of £500ish from £55/month however I assumed in this £169/month they were charging me my gas and electricity in that payment but it seems not. Is that even possible that they didn't charge me gas or electric for 4 months and then charged it to me in one big go? thankyou for your reply

Check that the final bill was calculated on the correct readings. I have been trying to change my supplier for the last few months, and submitted readings for the official transfer date - however my old supplier ignored these and estimated my final reading and bill. One month later the reading is still nowhere near their estimate - they are trying to nab some extra cash it seems!

If the final reading they are working on is correct, it may be that the previous bill was estimated.

Your old supplier has no responsibility for the switching process: it is managed by the new supplier. All meter readings provided by the customer on switch go through a third-party for review and adjustment based on historical data for the property. The reviewed readings are then passed to both the old and new suppliers as closing and opening readings. The important thing to check is that the meter readings being used by the 2 suppliers are the same.

I should have added that if a customer does not provide a meter reading on switch, then the third-party process will result in estimated readings. Usually, the cost difference is very small.

They should have told you about changing the DD amount, and if challenged about would no doubt say they did.
The new amount would probably have been based on the debt and estimated usage for the coming 12 months, divided by 12. With the bill covering the winter period, that is when your actual energy usage is highest, so your payments would not have reduced the debt by much. Had you carried on through the summer, a lot more of the monthly DD would have gone towards the debt, but now you have left them, they want the balance settling.
You've already learnt your lesson about estimated meter readings, so no need to say more on that.

Assuming the meter readings are correct then £426.42p seems quite reasonable for nearly 5 months during winter !!!

Just wanted to say that I have recently changed from Extra Energy to another supplier due to the fact that I had a large credit on my account and wanted it refunding but no one EVER answered the phone. This made me panic, so then I went to change to the other supplier. I actually pay slightly more now but only pay for what I use and have peace of mind as the new company have excellent customer service. Eventually they did answer the phone and it appeared that I did NOT have a credit as they only bill me twice a year and by the end of it I owed them £436.41...However, they did explain everything to me and set up a payment schedule for me which ends in two months. I'm still glad I have left them though because I felt totally out of control with this. Persevere, I hope they answer soon.

    I don't understand

    04/11/2015- 20/03/2016
Balance carried forward since previous bill £557.62
payments received since your previous bill £468
credits since your previous bill £0
Debits since your previous bill £0
balances before charges this period £89.62 DR

Does this mean DEBIT and not CREDIT?

Reading the above, it does not say whether the £557.62 is a CREDIT or DEBIT balance - which is it?

Charges for this period (Scottish power took over 21/3/16)

    Gas £155.46 DR
    Electricity £99.42DR
    Standing charges £151.24 DR
    Misc credits/debits £0
    Total excluding VAT £406.12
    Vat £20.30
Total charges for this period £426.42DR

    Total balance £516.04 DR!

    The £516.04 is the total of £89.62 + £426.42 = £516.04

So, the questions I would be asking would be

    1. What have you done with the payments made of £468

    2. What is the balance shown of £567.62: is this money I have paid and if so, why has it not been accounted for?

OP could have been a bit clearer as all EEs entries have either DR or CR after them but on the face of it the bill looks pretty straight forward and they are deep in DR. They have admitted that they have not really paid much attention. The only question I would be asking is are the EE close reads the same as the new supplier opening read. I know they used an estimate for mine even though I gave them the correct read on changeover day the same as I gave the new supplier.
