Renting in London

My job is taking me to London for a few years so I need to find somewhere to rent. I've spent lots of time working in London but it's still pretty daunting and I don't know where to even start...

I'll be working in Pimlico and would like to minimise the commute as much as possible (ideally no more than 20 minutes). I get £500pw towards rent, if I'm under that I can put the difference towards a travelcard. Looking for a 1 or preferably 2 bed property.

There are developments in Pimlico that fit the bill for around £470pw, this is the obvious choice most colleagues go for, but I'm thinking I can get more for the money a bit further out - but where???

Any advice on areas to consider or on finding a property greatly appreciated! Also if anyone has referral incentives for specific developments please PM details.

There are some dodgy sides to Pimlico so choose carefully. Greenwich would be nice.

There's a little road called Strutton Ground not too far away which I always loved the feel of (I used to work off Horseferry Road, and on Millbank just along from Pimlico). If you could get a flat over a shop there or a flat in a house, I think it'd be a good start and a nice walk to work. American friend of mine used to live there and wrote a poem about it once :) He liked his days around there. Funny little local community!

Greenwich is not next to Pimlico. You'd need to check the transport links carefully.

Sorry, didn't mean Greenwich was next to Pimlico! I used to get the train to Waterloo East from nearby and catch the 507 (I think!) bus to Millbank/Horseferry Rd (nr Pimlico). Looking at the timetables, it'd be too long so forget that one!

Ah yes I know Strutton Ground, often visit the market there for lunch. It's nice but I'm not sure there's much residential property and it's dead in the evenings, very little around there stays open after 6 which could be a pain if you need to pick up a loaf of bread or something after work.

Yeah Greenwich is a bit far and I'd prefer to be a single tube/train/bus away rather than having to change.

North part of Victoria line from Finsbury Park onwards has some cheap places, you could also choose somewhere like Teddington, Putney, Earlsfield etc and get the train into Vauxhall.

Don't rule out the chequered local authority blocks on page st.
Some of the flats have been refurbished.
The concrete buildings are lovely and cool inside in the summer.
They are a lot better than they look.

I used to live in "upmarket" St georges wharf in Vauxhall and that was constantly roasting and very noisy.
I much prefer the down market council block which is quieter and cooler.

You are in between tube stations here, but that doesn't matter so much if you are walking to work.

Greenwich only has trains to Cannon Street now.

Would you walk to work from Victoria or Vauxhall mainline stations? That opens up a huge area of South London if so.

Yep, another for Page Street. It was in my mind too. Used to visit the Regency Cafe regularly! Been used for film sets and everything - popular place!

Bloody hell, didn't know Greenwich only went to Cannon St now! That's a bit of a surprise!

I used to also get the 507 from Victoria too - it was a very easy little journey. If it's still running! I presume it is.

Marylebone (/parts of Baker St) is lovely too - only 3 stops from Oxford Circus to Pimlico, although you would need to walk to Oxford Circus.

I second these places. Earlsfield is lovely (I have to admit to bias here, as it's where I grew up and lived for 30 years!), the train goes into Waterloo from there.

Putney is also nice, and you have the river and Bishop's Park for summer evening strolls. Plenty of pubs and restaurants.

    I agree with this.

There are some really lovely flats on the Churchill Gardens Estate. They are large with great river views.

Any chance you could stretch your budget a bit? £700pw would get you a fantastic flat in Rivermill House or Panoramic House on Grosvenor Road.
