Amount of compensation due

Hoping for some help and advice.

I booked a flight from Rome to Manchester with Germanwings via Dusseldorf. After arriving in Dusseldorf the connecting flight was cancelled and we had to rebook our flights. We were offered overnight accomodation and Germanwings have admitted responsibility. Am I entitled to compensation for the entire journed i.e. Rome to Manchester as this would be over the 1500 km limit or is it just from Dusseldorf which is less than 1500km.

We were unable to rebook the light online as the booking showed the flight starting in Rome and therefore according to the website we had already flown and therefore could not rebook and had to arrive very early the next morning at the check-in desk in the hope that we might be successul in getting a seat that day.

As the flight was booked as one flight albeit that it involved a change of aircraft I feel it should be classed as the longer distance.

I would be grateful for your thoughts and comments please.
