Forgot to update registered car address

Hi,

When I moved I updated the address on my driving license but it stupidly didn't occur to me to update the address on my car registration.

I returned from a long time abroad a while ago and discovered I was sent a letter from the DVLA saying my SORN application was successful but they noticed the address I provided (my current address) didn't match the registered address. It didn't say anything on there at all about it being an offence or about penalties so I'm hoping they don't take it too seriously?

That being said, I just sold the car so was going to ring them about a car tax refund but given the small amounts, am I better off just writing it off and not bringing the wrong address to their attention and risking a fine? I think I'm owed about £15 from when it was cancelled with the SORN (which I assume they automatically posted to my old address?) and about £20 from cancelling this latest one.

Obviously there's also the issue about notices possibly being sent to the wrong address and me therefore not responding to them, but I don't deliberately speed etc. so there shouldn't be any.

The VED refund is processed automatically when the keeper change goes through, and is sent to the registered keeper address.

I know - unless you're saying it's sent to the registered address then that's it - no questions or change of information allowed?

Yes it's been sent off (on Sunday though so maybe not processed yet) - it didn't occur to me at the time and the new owners were really keen to get it sent off for some reason.

declared online is instant , by post might take a week , make sure you have access to your old property or NIPS thru the post

ps: I think if you taxed you car online with a debit card , it goes back to the same card

I don't have access to the old property and have no idea what NIPS is?

My only option seems to be to call them up and explain. I was just wondering whether that opens me up to a risk of getting fined for not changing the address sooner?

EDIT: I think I did it online with a debit card both times and it hasn't come back. Maybe it's worth waiting a while and seeing if it comes back this time then.

It doesn't. DVLA only do cheques.

    Notice of Intention to Prosecute.

    Speeding tickets etc.

Until you get the confirmation from DVLA that they've processed the keeper change - then wait a couple of weeks - you may still get tickets through, where the car's actually being driven by the buyer. Except, of course, you won't get the confirmation, because it'll go to the registered address...

Ah, well as I said I don't have access to that property, though I'm 99.9999% certain there are any NIPS for me, and I wouldn't imagine they'd generate any more before the change is processed.

Though my concern throughout has been fining me for the failure to update address, which the site lists as £1000. Does no-one have any experience as to whether I'll risk incurring them if I call them up and explain I failed to update the address? If there's a risk that they'll fine me I'd much rather just lose the £30 or so of car tax refunds I was due!

And thanks everyone for the replies so far.

Thanks I'll leave it then, hopefully they don't get any tickets before the update is processed!

It wasn't just a case of forgetting to update, I completely forgot such a document existed! I updated my driving license at the time and, while it seems obvious now, it didn't occur to me that the car registration is completely separate to the driving license.
