You could do this until the puppy grows; as they do ,very quickly.

We have a pen but need some way of stopping her get into various rooms /stairs

If the gate is too short could you add small blocks in between fittings and door frame?

This is exactly what my hubby did on our gate - we use it on the front door so that we can have it open in hot weather without the dog getting out. Works a treat.
