Tracking a Cashed Cheque

Hi
Basically, I have checked my online banking this evening and noticed that a cheque has been cashed which I was told got lost 4 months ago. However when talking to the person who the check was made out to he is insisting that he hasn't cashed it. But due to various events in the last couple of months I'm not sure if this is true and he's just being a bit of a tit.
Is there anyway i can find out who cashed the cheque before i take this further to fraud team as id rather not get him in trouble if he's just being immature.

Stupid question, but when he told you that he lost it, why didn't you cancel it with the bank?
You can request a copy of the cheque from the bank, which may well have the account number it was paid into printed on it.
Then, ask him to check that against his account number, and tell him that if it doesn't match his, you'll be going to the police to find out who is defrauding you.0 -
Your bank will be able to supply you with the cheque (or a scan of the front and back) which will show the branch stamps and any endorsements.
If you were told the cheque was lost four months ago you should have instructed your bank to stop it then.
If the person is trying to obtain the money twice from you then he's not being a tit, he's being a fraudster. If the cheque was genuinely lost, but has subsequently been cashed, someone else has stolen it.
Tell the person to "check their own records again" as, if they don't confirm to you within 24 hours that the money has reached their account, you will have to inform the police.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Ask him to double check his statement and also tell him that you are requesting info to see whose
account it has been paid into and then will be ringing the fraud team
You never know, he might just miraculously suddenly say that he didnt see it on his statement when he first checked and has found it now.
Time for a reund methinksmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for advice.
At the point when the check was lost i trusted his word and the bank i'm with also charges £10 to cancel any checks without extenuating circumstances.
I have already asked if the bank could send me a copy of the check and they were unwilling to do so without good reason. Which at this point i would rather not tell them that i suspect fraud as they will just direct me to the fraud department straight away.
Currently I've told him to check his statement thoroughly for the last two weeks and let me know by tomorrow morning as i will then be contacting the fraud department at that time.0 -

Most banks do not charge for a lost cheque.
There should be no reason why your bank should not provide you with a copy - at the moment its your business not theirs.
...But before you go charging in gunho just remember your bank has done nothing wrong here - you issued a cheque to somebody for £x and as you had sufficent funds in your account and no stop in place on the cheque, they paid it.
If the original payee still denies paying in the cheque then somebody else has obviously amended the name on the cheque - so then its time to discuss this with the bank's fraud team.0 -
Which bank are you with?0

They charge for cancelling cheques to stop people doing it frivolously - but being lost is a perfectly reasonable excuse for it being done free.
And if they're asking for a reason, just tell them you need it in order to cross reference some details.0 -
At my last job I occasionally needed to see a copy of one of our customer's cheques and by and large it took NatWest about 5-10 minutes to fax or email it over.
We could print copies of our own cheques online.
To clarify - I worked for a small agency bank.0 -
Depends on the T&Cs of the account.
Some do charge for all stopped cheques regardless.cheesetoast wrote: »They charge for cancelling cheques to stop people doing it frivolously - but being lost is a perfectly reasonable excuse for it being done free.
