Id for over 18s

My eldest son is 18 and wants to go out drinking. I'm not keen on him taking his passport with him in case it gets lost if he is drunk. What options are there for id cards?

Thanks.

Provisional or driving licence? Just as valuable but easier to slot in your wallet.

My youngest has got a citizen card, it's reasonably cheap to get and seems to be accepted most places, he's not had any problems with it anyway. The older 2 have got their driving licences as ID. Yep, passports are a nightmare, they don't fit in a wallet, and risk getting bent, bashed, soggy or lost.

  • Driving licence is probably the best option - a lot of bars/clubs will only accept Passport or Driving licence.

Citizen Card, Drivers (or Provisional) Licence, Passport or a Validate are the ones I have in the past accepted as I.D. while working in an age-related sales capacity. (Young Scot if in Scotland as well) I believe all of them are at least government backed and as a result were slightly more trustworthy. Thankfully I've never needed to test the trustworthy theory out as I've never been done for selling underagers products they shouldn't be getting!

Some places *may* take student cards, official as they may be it's not always the case they have the relevant details (D.o.B) on them.

A provisional license. It has a photo and DOB (which are the two most important parts) and will be accepted in other countries as proof of age.

Thanks everyone. He's not learning to drive, so doesn't have a driving license. Will have a look into the other schemes for him.

the provisional is the cheapest and most useful of the lot.. 34quids and then he can fund his own lessons at any point in the next 10 years.. regardless of his plans right now.. it is the cheapest most widely accepted Id
