how do I become a 'new' customer again?

I have just come to the end of my first mobile contract.
I need a new phone as this one is no longer working properly.
Looking at the website with the deals on and then discussing it with the upgrade team I mentioned I wanted one of those but was told I couldn't as they were for new customers only  They could not get anywhere near those prices.
The issue is I would like to keep my number, can it be transferred to pay and go so then I become a 'new' customer or is there another way round this?
Thanks

For example.
My partner had a phone on TalkTalk. New customer offer was half of that for an existing customer so she took out a new contract. She then went to the EE shop and acquired a SIM card. She then transferred her existing number to that phone then a few days later transferred her number back to the new TalkTalk contract. Overlap was about 1 week. She carried two phones for that time. One with the PAYG SIM in it with no credit to receive calls and the new contract to make calls from for that week.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Is the deal not available from other network?
There is a way, but take a while.
Ask for PAC code from existing provider
Get yourself a PAYG sim from other network.
Transfer number across to PAYG
Ask for PAC from new provider.
port the number back as new customer
Question - it usually be cheaper to buy the mobile straight away and get monthly SIM/ PAYG. Have you consider this option?0 -
I normally get a GiffGaff sim, and use it for a month as a stop-gap between moving from one network to another.. i'm sure it'll work moving from one network and back to the same.0
