    You say

This doesn't appear to be the case according to the following Sainsbury's Bank web site:

    http://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/savings/sav_saveback_dsrv_skip.shtml

    where it says

    SaveBack in 4 easy steps
    1. When paying for your shopping with a debit card ask to SaveBack at the checkout.
    2. Tell the checkout operator how much you would like to transfer to your savings account.
    3. Hand over your instant access saver cashcard along with your debit card.
    4. Take the receipt confirming your deposit.

The message was about some other in-store paying in service and isn't on the website any more.

I got my second pair of name verification documents back in today's post but am still "awaiting verification". From the covering letter, it looks like they are a bit busy at the moment.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Aren't Sainsbury's and Birmingham Midshires both Halifax BoS so why the difference in protocol?
Noobie (not so :D) trying to make loads a dosh - please bear with all my questions  Thanks :D

Thanks for all your responses. I was at my previous address for seven years, and am on the electoral roll at my new address, so it wouldn't have been too hard to verify these details.

I might be being a bit hard on Sainsbury's but I couldn't figure out how BM was able to confirm my details electronically but Sainsbury's couldn't.

I'm going to try Icesave; anyone had any experienec of their verification procedure?

The ironic thing there is that it is Birmingham Midshires (part of the HBOS group) that run the banking platform for Sainsburys Bank which is 50:50 owned by HBOS and Sainsburys. They could have verified your ID by refering to your BM account.
Icesave verified my ID electronically with no problem but then so did Sainsburys Bank!

Specifically, it's 50:50 owned with (the Governor and Company of the) Bank of Scotland, a subsidiary of HBOS plc (don't they have a complicated corporate structure?).

BM share Halifax's FSA registration number, whereas Sainsbury's Bank has it's own registration number. Maybe FSA/data protection rules prevent the sharing of personal information across different FSA registration numbers?
  • Ironically I had no bother opening my Sainsbury's account - I was verified electronically and did not have to send any documentation, but had no end of bother trying to get my details verified for my HBOS accounts which I opened after the Sainsbury's account

Its possible that they can't share data between Sainsburys and HBOS but there has been a post on here from someone who had similar problems with ID verification at Sainsburys who said he had given them his Halifax account details and they were then able to verify his ID.
Edit:- Post #15 of this thread

I already have a Halifax account so maybe that's how BM were able to confirm my details.

Anyway, I have successfully managed to open an Icesave account

However Sainsbury's required a plethora of documents, including my ORIGINAL passport and driving licence.

Hi :) Sorry to go off topic, but I'm not sure if I'll be up a certain creek without a paddle.

I don't drive and haven't been abroad since the year dot so no passport either :o

If all this bumph is needed, would it be cheaper to a) get a passport, b) a provisional license, or c) hope that my N.I. number is sufficient?

    Thanks.

    You may not need anything.

Sainsbury's will first use electronic verification from the electoral roll. You may well pass this check and need no further ID.

I have a fealing that they aint doing a electronic verification (or they are setting the bar too high). Halifax let me open a current account without seeing ID but for a sainsbury's saving account I have to send inportnat documents via the post :(
