Boiler pressure gets too high then turns off

I recently moved to a new flat and for the first day or so the boiler worked for a while, stopped working then worked a few hours later, then when i was drying clothes over the radiators it turned off and didnt go back on for a few days, but the hot water still worked, it just wouldnt fire for central heating, i had someone come and look at it but by the time they came 3 days later it worked again and he basically said "if it aint broke dont fix it". Today i was doing the washing again and kept an eye on the pressure, it rose to about 2.5 and turned off and now wont go back on, does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it?

before we replaced it. The pressure kept dropping to zero, we adjusted it via the valve-thingies underneath it, heating would come back on, go up to 3 and a half, then blow out and plummet to zero again. I suppose it is your responsibility, not a landlord's? That's probably a silly question, sorry.

Do you know the guy who came to look at it? Maybe get someone else around after asking friends/colleagues to recommend someone? And ask if they charge call-out fees before you book them. If all else fails, there are websites with "trusted trades" type names but I would far rather go on personal recommendation, personally.;)
