If your local exchange has a limited number of providers with presence there, you might not be able to transfer ("port" in telecoms parlance) your number from talktalk to them. If you were moving to another area of the country with a different STD code, you could not take your number with you.

I can only suggest you ask talktalk the reason and, if it does not make sense, dispute it. Best of luck.

Talk Talk, Sky, BT, Plus Net (and all those providers who wholesale through them) all have number porting agreements in place so you should be able to transfer your number between them, assuming you are transferring to a new provider at the same address.

As Smodlet says above, if you are moving to another address your chosen provider is unlikely to be able to transfer your number.

If you are transferring to another ISP, then the new provider should arrange the transfer of the number (gaining provider led these days).

If you are just leaving TT and not going to another ISP. then I can understand their reply.
