Tax, MOT but no insurance - can I park on road?

Got new car so, obviously, had to insure that one so switched insurance policy over.

Taxed until end of May obviously, and hoping to sell it asap but, for now, its parked on the road. Is this allowed?

Also, is there any way for anyone else to check? (I know you can check tax status of any vehicle).

Neighbour is a nightmare. Hes one of those who thinks no-one else has the right to park on the street outside his house because its "his" space. Can guarantee he will check EVERY car thats parked on the street.

At the moment, car is on driveway but I've only got so much space.

No. If its on the road, it needs to be insured. Keep it on the driveway.

If it's taxed, it needs to be insured, whether it's on the road or not.
If it's on the road, it needs to be insured. Full stop.

Seems to be saying that Continuous Enforcement means they do check to see whos not got insurance. I guess this is easy to do - check which vehicles are not on insurance database, then get a list of those not SORN.

Seems to be saying they then send you a letter to warn you rather than fine you straight away. Not sure if its the same if someone reports you (although it costs £4 I see for someone elses car so neighbour might not bother.

Oh well, better sell it quick. Might have to put other car on road, this one on driveway and SORN it - all legal then.

Yes, that's the option that I considered when I took delivery of a new car and still had the old one to sell, although luckily I was able to get rid of the old one within the 7 days new car cover that I got from Ford.

You may well find that your insurer will cover both vehicles temporarily cheaply, or even free.

And that's where I would leave it until you can shift it.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • We changed my wifes car last month and bought the new one before we sold the old one.

I looked at the cheapest option of insurance so that we could test drive for potential buyers and ended up taking out a 12 month policy with the Co-Op and cancelled it as soon as we sold the car which was 12 days later. It ended up costing us £30ish which was cheaper than all the temp insurance companies.

Our own insurers wouldn't provide cover on the second car but Co-Op also allowed us our full no claims as a second car.

It doesn't cost £4 to check someone else's car!. You can check to see if any car is insured just by using the number plate and its free!

You dont need the neighbour to grass you up the DVLA will do it for you. Its not taxed so you must SORN it which cancels the tax.
