I don't get to post much but read daily, but I know someone on here will be able to help with this.
It's my LO's first birthday on Thursday and I want to make a cake (only second one ever, first was on daughters first birthday!).
How much ready to roll icing do you think I'll need to make this ? http://veganantics.co.uk/shop/full-sized-vegan-cakes-collection/dinosaur-cake/
Just the green - it comes in 250g packs (tesco) and I'm sure one of each colour would be OK for the blue / yellow / white - but will 3 do it for the green ? or should I buy white and food colour and dye it myself (the colours look a bit insipid on tesco website.
and do you think a victoria sandwich would be OK underneath (my maderia attempt 3 years ago wasn't great !)
thanks :beer::D
Hello
It depends on how you're making the features i.e. the head, feet and tail. The middle looks like 2 x 8" cakes (Victoria sponges will work fine for this). To cover that I would recommend at least 500g of fondant. For the features I would use this pack for the other colours: http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/sainsburys-price-comparison/Home_Baking/Dr_Oetker_Regal_Ice_Ready_to_Roll_Icing_Coloured_5_per_pack_500g.html?TrackingCode=11.Dye64h4Y2UyDpHDWagZweg
If making the other features out of cake I would make an additional 8" layer and carve it up, then use another 250g of green fondant. I hope that makes sense! I will add if you buy white in the end and dye it, the Dr Oetker colours are crap at dying as are the water ones. Gel colours from Americolour and Wilton are brilliant, but expensive. Hope it goes well'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good'0 -
All credit janed for giving that cake a go....if this is only the 2nd cake you've made what did you do for the first?frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Agreed. My second attempt included a lot of piped swear words and insults that looked like a 5 year old wrote them. Now I put them in the cake, so when they cut the cake, the 'love' is revealed :rotfl:'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good'0 -
Funnily enough Chris Hemsworth posted this a couple of days ago...

Brilliant - thank you. I was planning on making the features from cake so it looks like my 3 packs of fondant guess was about right.
I think I might give dying a miss and my dinosaur might just have to be a bit pale looking ! will post a picture if I can after Thursday provided it's not a complete disaster.0 -
My cake baking is now a little more ambitious thanks to the elite and PD....But it still never resembles cake and we usually still eat it from a bowl with cream on top.

I know exactly what you mean. I've rarely made a cake that translates precisely from my thoughts. I'm hoping to this week though - a child through this charity I bake for, has requested a fire engine or car cake, so sod it going to try and make one! I usually make flat cakes as they're easy to transport and London is full of bloody speed bumps :rotfl:'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good'0 -
