Self-build home on wheels

I have spent £350 of my hard-earned cash and bought an old hay bale trailer . Having watched many episodes of George Clarke, I intend to create my own amazing space! Has anyone else got a similar project on the go? Would you like to share information? I am in the very early stages and am keeping a spreadsheet of all my spending. So far I have managed to buy an oak barn door from B&Q for just £90. I am working on finding some new tractor/trailer tyres at the moment. Looking for some moneysaving friends with any tips and advice and am happy to share mine. :D

Well, at the moment I may just have a lovely spare room. I would love it to become a new business venture but I'm dipping my toe carefully in! The worst that can happen is my teenage daughter will have a lovely outdoor room of her own. I have also started a blog if anyone wants a look at my progress so far - smallspacebigplans.com

None, provided it is temporaty, ie mobile,

Planning office told me this recently whilst dealing with a problem/complaining neighbour.
Farm trailer with 2 tiers of jumbo bales would be allowable.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Go on to youtube and search for "Ana White Tiny House" The couple have a series of videos (about 13 episodes I think) of how they converted a trailer into a house.

No height restrictions if its not a permanent structure.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

No, but I do own a static caravan and have considered replacing it with a log cabin.

tiny house nation might give you ideas. Loads on youtube from Canada and USA, I love how some are off the grid but have entertainment systems, heating/cooking/washing and toilet stuff in a small space.

Also I'm sure Kevin McCloud did a show where he made one in the first season and the second season he moved it to the edge of a cliff or something? Sorry can't remember exact details of the show.

I can't remember the height restriction for temporary structures in garden but around 2m-2.4m high sounds familiar. Saying that I remember reading an article in the paper the past month how a bloke built his daughter a tree house and it was 4.5m and was told to remove it as it was over 4m high without permission. I think you have to check your local council for correct information for your area.

If it has wheels it isn't classed as a temporary structure.

You just need to make sure it complies with the Caravan Act 1960 (IIRC).

Length (exclusive of any drawbar): 60 feet

    Width: 20 feet

Overall height of living accommodation (measured internally from the floor at the lowest level to the ceiling at the highest level): 10 feet

Wow! So many responses and lots of new leads to investigate later. Thanks. Seems from what people have said, that I should be okay with the height. Gloomendoom, what do you use your caravan for?
