Thinking about this I might personally try the route of "I just wanted to get an interview and fully meant to bring this up at the interview but didn't get chance route".0

How big was the gap between leaving and applying?
Did you perpetuate the still employed status at interview?0 -
The OP says that the company are doing a background check and they must fill in another form. At this stage, with this information, I'd advise honesty. It may be that the background check won't unearth this, but it'd be a damned poor background check if it doesn't. And if there is another lie told on another form, there is little excuse. In the employers shoes, finding out a lie as a result of checks when someone has continued to lie - I wouldn't care what their excuse is or how good it sounds. I wouldn't employ someone who tells me lies.
And I would stick to having had a hard time managing the after effects of the miscarriage, and say nothing about the reason being connected with the employer not supporting you. With the best will in the world, I am sorry for your loss, but you had an employer, not a social worker. Employers aren't there to be supportive. Some will be, and some may be a lot better at supporting staff. But in the end, all they are concerned about is you turning up to work. So you don't want to give a new employer the impression that you are expecting anything, not on top of also lying.0 -

Most employers would read that as "I just lied to get an interview and fully meant to bring this up but instead just kept on with the lies".
When you're in a hole, don't keep digging!0 -
Bag another job with the confidence or high of getting this one and you can then tell the truth? if it's financial services you will be found out or will need to appear flimsy at worst - or get your old employer on side if you left on good enough terms? tough I don't think there is a way out? It would have been far, far easier admitting unemploymency.0

Keep stum until confronted about it. If the firm is that serious about 'honesty' in the recruitment process you'll get the sack anyway.
Life's not fair and neither is the workplace.
Chances are they won't even ask for a reference even if they request an address for one.
I know someone who as a postman hoarded the mail in his house and went to prison for it. A couple of years later he is now a manager of a local food store with a million pound turnover.

I'm astounded that so many people are advising that you lie or withhold the truth.
As stated by one person on this thread, lies have a habit of coming back to haunt you, and when you lie, you will have to keep it up for the duration of your stay at that company.
And if anybody at your place happens to know an old colleague or an old colleague ends up at your place, then that will be trouble.
IMO, tell them the whole situation, maybe they will be sympathetic but its not worth lying, no matter what colour some people like to attach to it.0 -
I personally have lied during an interview about where i was previously working and the length of time and it never came back o bite me.
I would stay quiet and see what happens. The chances are nothing will come of it. With references, ask and old collegue to be the contact. P45 no problem, as you can fill in a P46. Failing that, ring HMRC, tell them your new employer, and they send a tax code notification to the company.
I dont think even if you were found out you loose your job. Good luck.0
