Treating people with respect should be the default position on both sides.
I have been spat on, assaulted, threatened all for doing my job. People seem to think it's ok to behave how the hell they like towards "public servants". Guess what- we are people too. The majority of us treat people well. I can't make what I have to say sometimes any easier to hear, but I will still say it with respect & politely.0
