    It does sound like he's got a drinking problem if he's drinking in secret and hiding the fact, so any replacement booze he bought you probably wouldn't make it into your possession. Write it off as a loss, maybe give him information about a local AA group, and change the locks on the day you've stated he needs to be out by. You've been a fair and reasonable landlord, but you're not his carer.

    The friend obviously didn't find him too much of an idiot to go out with, at least for a period of time.

    Perhaps he only started drinking and getting depressed, after the friend dumped him?
