I wouldn't go too crazy but it's sweet to do something to commemorate the occasion. Even just take her out for a nice meal? I think a special treat together will be nice. This is what me and my partner usually do (once we get married I expect we'll just switch to celebrating that anniversary instead)

Would she prefer a present or a meal out or even, if funds allow, a night away?

As lovely as it is to receive presents, I prefer it when my OH surprises me with a day out somewhere (sometimes with lunch, other times with a picnic). It is just so nice to spend a day together (he works long hours and often 6 days a week).

When I first met my now husband our lives were in turmoil. I love the smell of jasmine and it relaxes me. He bought me a jasmine plant the first time he came round for dinner 15 years ago and had done once a year since.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

My bf and I tend to go away around our anniversary (short city break) so we just get each other silly cards and save the money for our trips. I know not everyone can afford to go away, but even just a day away somewhere, or a nice meal, is something I would suggest. Or get something small and soppy, a plant is a great idea also, a bonsai tree or something.

He hates anyone knowing this, but my bf wrote me a poem for our first anniversary as I'd always joked he wasn't the romantic type. Even the thought that he'd sat down and written it for me was amazing to me.

I find it more of female thing remembering these dates and wanting to do something about them, I never bothered for stuff like this as do not feel the need, Plus she wants for nothing anyway her words not mine.

Some set their expectations low to avoid disappointment...:)

I definitely think dating-type anniversarys should be celebrated. I think it's more popular the younger you are, mainly because nowadays young couples are together so much longer before marriage. I couldn't imagine not having celebrated the last five years with my partner! We have no intention of marrying any time soon so it would seem odd to be celebrating a 1st anniversary after maybe 10 years together...

Present I'd just buy something small. A nice potted plant for the windowsill or a pretty ornament for the house.

I read a book recently that said everyone has a different way of receiving love:

    Words of Affirmation
    Quality Time
    Physical Touch
    Acts of Devotion
    Gifts

My advise is, figure out which way your girlfriend feels love the most and then cater to that. As an example words of affirmation could be a love letter or poem, physical touch could be a massage, quality time could be taking her out somewhere.

I'd bet money that Catkin's love language is quality time :-)

Me and OH always observe our anniversary both marriage and when we got together it's important to us as a couple

Past presents have including things like a pandora charm, cd or DVD, cuddly toys just silly little things that he knows I'll like or I've been after a while. We also exchange cards I've kept them all and I love reading back over the little messages from him especially when he was working away for a long time

We also always try and do something on the day to mark it. Our first date was to a gig so we normally have a look at who's touring around that time. Last year we went to see Motley Crue and spent the weekend sightseeing in London just free stuff like the museums, hamleys ect
