Berkeley Ergonomic mattresses contain Polypropylene

I just want to let everyone know that the Berkeley Ergo beds contain a LOT of Polypropylene (and chemicals in the latex) because the dealers don't acknowledge this synthetic component even though they list, describe and praise all the other components..
At the same time they call the mattresses "organic mattresses", "all natural mattresses" and more.
So just a head up if anyone is thinking of buying one. Don't let them tell you its an 'organic mattress' because it is not. Far from it.
Learn from my mistake.

http://www.berkeleyergo.com/faq/FAQ wrote:"The prime focus in our mattress design is function and performance not organic certification. While all our materials are certified chemically safe, mostly natural and some are certified organic we use polypropylene for our pocketed coil material because it performs better than cotton which is the only natural material available."
"Our nonwoven polypropylene is a chemically safe material that has been developed over 50 years ago and since been widely used for all kinds of everyday applications (food packaging, clothing etc.) It is also used in the medical field for sutures, artificial vascular grafts, catheters and disposable syringes. It has been used for pocketed coils for decades and proven to work extremely well."
Ah well, at least they told you before you bought it0 -
No, the problem is that the DEALER did not disclose the synthetic Polypropylene, which is where I and other consumers have all the contact. The dealer also did NOT list the Polypropylene in the mattress description even though they list ALL THE OTHER components. Rather instead the sales man advised me the mattress was 'all organic', and 'made from all natural materials'.
They need to disclose the synthetic Polypropylene at the dealer level so consumers can have ALL the information. It can be misleading with the dealers "Natural Mattress", "All Natural Mattress", and "Organic mattress" claims, all-the-while the mattress contains synthetic, non-natural material.
The post you display is from the FAQ on the manufactures website. No one buys directly from the manufacture. The beds are bought at the retail level in dealers across the usa and Canada.
I attempted to provide a few links to several dealers to demonstrate my point but this system won't allow links because I am a new user. One of the dealers, flybynight dot com a perfect example of a dealer making "Natural Mattress" claims and omitting the synthetic Polypropylene. I hope you will check it out.0 -
Have you looked on the retail sites in the UK where we are based?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Who is the "you" that you wish to "check it out"? If you mean MSE then I doubt whether they would do anything even if this was a UK issue. As a consumer in the UK you could complain to Trading Standards or to the ASA, but in the USA and Canada I have no idea what you are able to do. Perhaps you could take your issue to a more relevant website.0 -
I looked at this poorly designed website & managed to find (I think) one - just one - supplier in the UK so I'm not sure how relevant the OP's warning really is.0

Natural Latex
Why Latex?
Latex is a time-tested natural material that has been used for over seventy years in mattress manufacturing in Europe but is only now becoming popular in America. Latex is a natural material derived from the hevea tree.
Latex is the premier cushioning material. It lasts for years with no sags or depressions. Latex is extremely resilient, resumes its shape immediately and is renowned for its durability. Its ventilated structure is naturally moisture resistant, hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial. When combined with natural wool and cotton it makes the best mattresses you can find.
Polyurethane foam, memory foam and Tempur-Pedic foam are not latex. These synthetics cause you to sleep hot and their lifespan is only a fraction of real latex.0 -
What I meant was "I hope you will check it out" so you can see all the "Natural Mattress" claims, even though the mattress contains NON-NATURAL material. That is all.
It was an example of the mattress dealers who do not disclose the synthetic material, yet advertise the mattress as a "natural" mattress.0 -
I am not in the UK. I am in the USA.0

The point of reviewing the Fly By Night web site was to demonstrate all the "Natural Mattress" references, even though the mattress contains synthetic Polypropylene.
It was just one example of the dealers who omit the synthetic material, yet advertise the product as natural.0 -
Thank you.
I am in the USA.
My post is just a warning to consumers. I see the name of this forum was praise, vent and warning.0
