    Thanks for the replies everybody!

Am I right in understanding that Apple 'disable' non-Apple products somehow, so I would be better buying a genuine Apple product? Does this affect the Swiss Mobile products too?

I hadn't heard about airplane mode, but am trying it now - no difference so far, but then my 'fast' charger isn't.

I also hadn't heard about the effects of too much fast charging, but I have not yet as managed any kind of fast charge :o

I don't know if it's the case currently but Apple did 'disable' some third party cables a couple of years ago; something like "Accessory not Supported" appeared on the screen because the third party cables didn't include a MfI (Made for iPhone) chip.

My OH is currently using a Swiss with his Iphone and Ipad mini, it's not blocked and he says it's very fast.

He has had other cheaper cables that have come up with the 'not supported' message.

He bought it after I had to buy one for my Android devices when I was stranded at an airport, mine is definitely the fastest cable I've had.

I bought one from Lidl a couple of months ago. 2.1A and puts 17% per hour into my iPad 3 which has a much larger battery than the iPad2. Works way faster than my 2A Samsung charger which made around 12% per hour..

In theory the battery and device electronics should manage the cell charge rate, so as long as you're using genuine batteries, fast charging ought not be an issue.

Indeed, Qualcomm (who make the Snapdragon processors everyone but Samsung and Apple use) have a system where the phone and compatible charger negotiate a charge voltage which can be as high as 12v for the fastest charging (eg an LG G4 battery empty to full in about an hour). The biggest enemy is heat, but a short burst beats a long slow one.
