Struggling to find reasonable cost flights from UK to BK in July/August school holday time, did see some out of Edinburgh on skyscanner ( 16/8 - 30/8 ) for £366, but obviously the time and expense of getting from Devon to Edinburgh would probably not be worthwhile.

Qatar are now flying out of Birmingham, they have some very keen pricing in Far East routes over the next few weeks as I've been thinking about Bangkok, Singapore or kl, might be worth a look.

The biggest risk in the rainy season (or at any time of the year) is flight disruption because of bad weather. Otherwise the rain is just part of the Thailand experience and whenever you go you have to be prepared for last minute change of plans due to a downpour. Fortunately you are never far for a bar with cold beer to watch the rain from.
