calling Thailand experts..

welcome any feedback on whether this basic outline schedule is realistic ?
For a 2 week trip.

UK to Bangkok, stay a couple of nights in BK

Internal flight to Khon Kaen ( have family living & working there )
Stay 4/5 days, quality time with family + explore local area.

Internal flight Khon Kaen to Krabi Town, then taxi to Ao Nang ( have read some good feedback on A N )
Approx a week here for a beach chill out type thing.

Internal flight Krabi to Bangkok

Bangkok to UK

One potential issue is that we would have to go in July or August because of work commitments / school holidays - when it is still rainy season, i think would be more of a problem for Krabi than Khon Kaen..

Thanks for any feedback.

I can't see anything unrealistic about it, you should be fine to do all of that in the time available. I don't know Ao Nang and I haven't been to Thailand in the rainy season so I can't comment on whether that is a suitable destination at that time of year. Khon Kaen isn't somewhere I would particularly recommend to tourists but with family there I'm sure you'll find plenty to keep you as busy as you want to be. I went from there to Bangkok by bus which was pretty straightforward.

Yep agreed KK isnt particularly a tourist destination, but the family time will be important, and those few days would be bookended by BK and Krabi .

    Cheers for feedback :)

Make sure you spend your final night in Bangkok or a Bangkok Airport hotel. Cuts out any stress of short connection time between internal and international exit flight.

I don't know about the weather at that time of year, but we loved Ao Nang. If you want chill out consider Railay beach, you get to it by long tail boat from Ao Nang, and it was perfect (8 years ago though!) we stayed in sunrise tropical hotel, in a beautiful villa, and in Ao Nang at The Cliff, surprised that it was on the road from the photos, but the second you step in its like an oasis of calm!

I'd suggest that you look into a night in Ayutthaya rather than Bangkok to end your trip. It's the old capital and much calmer with a few sights. You might prefer the hustle and bustle of Bangkok but if not then do a little investigation and see what you think.

Don't get me wrong, Bangkok is a must; it's an exciting place with a lot to do. It's just that you may prefer a slower end to your trip.

When I stayed there the airport was about equidistant between Bangkok & Ayutthaya but there's a new airport now and I can't be sure how far it is.

Yes, on recent trips I have always ended with a night in a Bangkok airport hotel as it's not worth the risk and hassle of a connecting flight - especially in the rainy season. There are loads of cheap hotels near the airport which are all much of a muchness for a short stopover.

BS Residence is a great budget option airport hotel, that offers a free transfer, and it's got an A1 swimming pool.

But it's only about 100 yards from a Thai Beer Garden. Nice and quiet until 2200. Then the noise cranks up and your hotel room vibrates until 0300.

I have had a couple of visits to Thailand during the so-called rainy season, and do not recall any problems with the weather.

Thanks all for further info

My son emailed me to advise that no flights from Khoen Kaen to Krabi, so would obviously have to go via BK.

Struggling to find reasonable cost flights from UK to BK in July/August school holday time, did see some out of Edinburgh on skyscanner ( 16/8 - 30/8 ) for £366, but obviously the time and expense of getting from Devon to Edinburgh would probably not be worthwhile.
