Transferring ownership of a car privately

Options
Hello,My dad is giving me his car as I've moved 200 miles away. I've been a named driver on this car for a few years and used it when I lived at home but now we need to move insurance etc into my name.
We tried yesterday using the online v5c form but it wouldn't recognise the number. Strange as this is definetly our latest copy. So we'll have to send this off to the DVla through the post. But how do you know when the ownership has changed? Ie. When I need to buy new tax? And when can I start an insurance policy in my name? Do we need to have confirmation back from the dvla first? Or can I start my policy now as I'm now the main driver?

you should tax it using the number on the small green section of the v5 , this has more digits than the doc ref on the front section.

insurance needs to be running permanently , unless the car is off the road

try again with the online form (tomorrow) 9-6 use the doc ref number from the front page of the v5.

Because it's the new Beta on-line system which has Sunday off. ;)

The V5C has nothing to do with ownership. Dad has given you the car, so ownership is already transferred. You can truthfully tell the insurers that you are the owner and that you will become the registered keeper ASAP.

Correct - but that'll be on Tuesday - after the Bank Holiday.

I don't know if the gov.uk sites take the Bank Holiday or not. ;)

They're also closed on a bank holiday.
  • Thank you for the responses everyone.
To confirm, we tried with the ref number on the vc5 document and it couldn't recognise it. My dad gave me this over the phone, should we have looked at the number on the green bit of the form?
If I go online to look at insurance quotes, should I just put myself as registered keeper/owner etc as I will be soon or do I need to tell them not at the moment then change once we've got confirmation?
    Many thanks

You need to use the number on the the green part of the V5C which is labelled as V5C/2 which is also numbered at part 10.

For on-line quotes I would put in that you are the owner/keeper - which you will be very soon.

ok I am looking at a V5 that I transferred yesterday

number on the front says 6105 xxx 0162

however the v5 new keepers part says 56105 xxx 1062

so in theory the number your father gave you should be the same as on the v5 new keeps , but remove the first number

shorter number (11 numbers) for transfer , 12 number one for tax

try again before posting on tue

You will also need to licence the car using the number from the green V5C/2.
When the DVLA process the change of registered keeper, they will cancel the current licence and refund any outstanding duty to the previous registered keeper.
