I hope that this is the right place for this.
Last year we were given 8 'cheeses' of silver birch. They are about 18" in diameter and a good 12" deep.
They need to be split into manageable sizes but can't work out the best way of doing this.
Can someone offer advice please?
Thanks.

Just take an axe to them, and do so asap...they are far easier to split when the tree has just been felled and the wood is still wet!
ETA: missed that they are a year old!!!
In that case an axe and some brute force!!! Good luck!!0 -
I use one of these, and hit it with the back of my large axe.
Works a treat on logs your size.

I'd second the wood grenade. Aldi or Lidl do them for about £8 on one of their recurrent offers, but can I suggest you get two in case one gets stuck..For really big bits don't start in the middle. (Experience talking on both counts..) I use a lump hammer which works fine.
Some woods are better split a bit dry as they develop natural cracks along which the wood splits. For smaller bits I use an axe/splitting wedge, but the grenade is my stump and large round buster.0 -
to make table-tops out of. Could have used those. No, I'm not kidding, I'm being serious. Really. OH does this as a hobby.0
