income support claim questions

Hello I'm new to the forums and also new to wanting to make a claim for income support. Me and my partner are looking into moving in together into our own place.
Is the claim made simply over the phone and what questions do they ask you. How long does it take for first payment?

Sorry for so many questions I've never been in this situation before :)

If you feel you qualify for income support with just those circumstances you can make the claim by phone.

It takes around 2 weeks in my area for the first payment. They ask a lot of questions regarding finances, previous finances and working and if your boy/girlfriend works etc if you live with them or not., and the phone call takes about 30 minutes.

Receipt of DLA doesn't qualify a person to claim ESA.

What rate of DLA are you on?
  • I'm not sure if I'm entitled to claim with me moving in with partner and him working part time.
  • I'm on lower rate care and mobility

My understanding was that you could no longer make a new claim for IS if disabled and must claim ESA.

They'd first look to see if you'd paid enough NI contributions for contributions based and if not look into income related (which would take into account your partners income).
  • Thank you :)
