Anyone live on a new build estate with Social Housing?

Options
I'm looking to buy a home and have seen some good deals on some new-build estates.
After having a chat with a sales advisor i noticed the houses across the road from a plot i was interested had SH on them?
I asked and she said its social housing and all new developments have a certain portion of them put aside. I had never heard of this so when i asked questions she was very vague and basically said the builder has nothing to do with them or who will live there. Now i don't want to come across as a snob but can i ask if anyone has recently moved onto a new build estate with social housing and point me in the right direction how they work?
Only asking as i'd hate to buy a home and then have problems with neighbours across the road (again i don't want to generalise but the sales advisor basically told me nothing other than they have to make some homes social housing) so i'm asking the question here.

The only difference will be the people over the road will be in less debt than you.

Are you assuming that those who live in social housing are somehow inferior to those who live in private-sector housing?

Because, unless that's what you're saying, I don't see what difference it makes.

If the neighbours across the road cause problems, you will be able to complain to whoever their house is rented from; if the neighbours who buy the house next door to you are a nightmare, there will be very little you can do.

    OK, that's a different question.

Social housing means they're owned by a housing association and rented out to those who qualify for them - usually, because they are lower income. They occupy part of the market segment that used to be occupied by council housing.
  • Ok thanks, don't know why the sales advisor wouldn't give me any details about it...

The planning requirement is more likely to be that the developers have to include affordable housing (which may or may not be social housing) - or alternatively pay the council to provide it elsewhere.

They may well have assumed you understood the (perfectly common) term, and thought you were asking for more detail of the HA's tenancy qualifications or the actual tenants. As, indeed, did I given your initial question...

Who did you think social housing was for? When you said you didn't want to have "problems with neighbours", it made it sound like you thought social housing was only for criminals and trouble-makers (hence the responses up-thread).

(I'm not having a go. I've genuinely never met anyone who didn't know about social housing before.)

Well as i have never bought on a new build with plots marked SH stamped all over, you have now met someone who didn't know what it was today.

That doesn't explain why you thought you were going to have problems with the neighbours. What kind of problems were you expecting?

Please don't look for something that isn't here, question answered and i have an idea of it now. Nothing more than that.
