Can you get broadband without

Options
Hi

Just wondering as BT are putting up their prices yet again (l don't want to be locked into a contract in case l move) is it possible to get broadband without phone/line rental - l have a mobile so only use the phone every now and again.

Many thanks

If you are in a Virgin media area you can have a broadband only service, but it costs about the same as a Virgin phone line and broadband service, you could use mobile broadband , but if you are talking about a broadband service delivered over a phone line, then you have to pay for using the phone line the broadband is delivered over

If you are going to move then once current contract ends you can use a mobile dongle .
  • This will very much depend on where you live but some areas have community broadband which comes via a wireless WAN and so do not need any phone line at all.

Because BT didn't want (at the time) to service the area in which I live we were fortunate that one of these was set up here and surrounding villages.

Works well as I get a reliable 10 down and 10 up with no download limits (plus they are just down the road so any issues are very quickly sorted!)

What about the FTTH service they (BT) are currently offering with speeds up to 300mb dl? Isn't it right that this service doesn't require a telephone line?

Whilst it doesn't require a copper telephone line the cost of the service is significantly more expensive than ADSL broadband plus line rental.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

With the fastest FTTH package showing as £52, that isn't a great deal more than the 76mb FTTC service. What makes it so much more expensive is forcing a telephone line rental that's apparently unnecessary for the delivery of the fibre service.

But as with ADSL, the mark up on the line rental can be used to offset the cost of the broadband service, so remove line rental and expect the cost of broadband to increase.

Openreach still need to maintain and repair the fibre line that provides your broadband connectivity, that's why you still need to pay line rental.

The reliability of fibre over copper has already been established, as appears to be the case for ongoing and long term high savings in maintenance costs. What are you basing this exorbitant additional cost requirement on (other than just increased profit margins?)

Perhaps they have worked in the communications industry like myself.

There are still costs involved with the upkeep and maintainance of fibre only products as well as the massive costs involved with laying out the infrastructure.

Virgin Media is Fibre but it still fails now and then and their broadband only product without a phone line isn't that much cheaper than their line rental & broadband only deals.
