domain name (for emails only)

Options
hi,

We hold a domain name under .org and this year we started paying register.com (web.com) a larger fee. We have 6 email addresses there with this form <familyname>.org. Do we have any way to purchase that month from an alternative provider for cheaper fees?

Nominet, the UK domain registry, increased their fees from March this year. You are going to be hit with the increased charges no matter who you go through. Of course, different providers may well mark the price up by different amounts.
I don't know what you are paying, so there may be cheaper providers out there. I use Vidahost for hosting, as well as registration. They charge £7.49 pa for a .org domain. I'm sure they are not the cheapest, but I've always had good service from them.

Since this year only we had to pay like £40 for the year. It was more like £10/year for the previous 7 years.

Now, the question is how can we choose to leave register.com and buy it through another one like you say. I assume the fee you mentioned is per year?
    Is that common?

Actually, we had jumped on a google domain promotion 4/5 years ago "organization" stuff... So we pay register.com, yet some of it is managed through google (I remember pointing some settings in google to the register.com hosts).

You can usually transfer a domain out of one registrar and into another, but have to follow a certain procedure.
    VIdahost describe it here:
    https://www.vidahost.com/knowledge-base/article/532/transferring-in-a-domain-name
The steps will be pretty much the same for other companies.

If you want all your email held in a "webmail" environment, you need to make sure you have hosting with enough storage to hold all your emails, and a service that allows you to have multiple email accounts on the same domain. That is how most email systems operate today, taking advantage of IMAP. If you use a POP3 client and delete the emails on the server after you receive them, just holding copies on your client, you need less space on your host, but cannot receive them on multiple clients, or get them back if your client loses them.

Others may be able to suggest hosting services that cater for email only, without any web hosting.
