I seem to be alone in thinking that its digusting that when using clubcard vouchers to pay for avis they charge you more than the advertised rate for the same vehicle. I just thought it was worth warning people. Free money isn't free money when it costs more for the same item.

Most Tesco deals are like this.

If you want to book a Haven Holiday deal then you have to call up and the rate is based on full price rather than any offer for the same holiday on the internet.

In addition a lot of places don't give you the full benefits. If you buy a park entry ticket at some places you get free entry for a year. A lot of the time when you pay by Tesco vouchers you often don't get this benefit.

No company will make a loss on your booking if they can avoid it and you've already got the booking for a discounted rate!

£168 is the cash price, because they are in competition with other firms for your cash.

£210 is the voucher price, because they aren't in competition and vouchers aren't as fluid as cash.

Looks like the eurostar deal is going to get better value as the train will be faster from Nov 14.

I stand corrected by Woby_Tide about the London Eye pass ... that's a good deal for anyone living close to their favorite! Interesting they have managed to restart it.

The Haven case I agree is another good example of where you are probably better off without the vouchers in most cases. Haven more or less promise their regular customers that the best special offers are reserved for them alone. Having used them quite a lot these past 2 years, I don't think a direct Haven offer can be bettered. The only time I got cheaper was a one-off Caravan Club deal. The crazy thing is that Caravan Club members still can't get a better deal than regulars at Haven.

What's that "cash is best" idea that you are arguing, RW? Are you saying that non-negotiable money like vouchers just isn't worth it's face amount? How does that work then?

It won't be a better deal for those passengers who previously travelled from Ashford as we are losing ALL services to Brussels and SOME services to Paris and now we have to travel all the way to St Pancras just to travel all the way back down the line through Ashford again, incurring more travel time and more cost (no Ebbsfleet is not an option as you can't get to it by train!)

    HI

I thought i'd share this with you as I'm quite disgusted.

I had a lot of clubcard vouchers and thought I'd use them for my holiday car rental. I checked it out online and when I went to book via the Tesco number the price changed from £168 to £210, this was a straight like for like quote. I couldn't believe it they did agree to reduce the cost but I haven't gone ahead in the end as you must book 21 days before you need the vehicle.

I can't believe that they exploit people like this.

My experience today is even worse - The " Pay now " price on the Avis site was £272, however they have stated that when paying with Tesco vouchers you have got to take the "Pay later" price which is £563 - more than double. This hardly seems fair. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

A Merlin Entertainment Group Annual Pass gives you 12 months entry to the UK’s top attractions: Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures, Madame Tussauds, BA London Eye and Warwick Castle allowing you to experience the magic over and over again!

£23.75 in Clubcard Vouchers gives The Merlin Entertainments Group Annual Pass, Normal Price £95

You cannot get into Chambers Live in Madame Tussauds. its in the terms and conditions. Bit of a bummer but there you go!

It seems that the range of travel options that you can use the tokens for is decreasing all the time. makes the tokens less appealing

I can't imagine that Tesco pay the retailer more than face value + 25% when a customer uses Deals tokens. So for them it's more for marketing and hoping you come back to them again. The best example of this are the RAC breakdown deals where renewal is at full price the next year.
