Clubcard vouchers/Avis warning

HI

I thought i'd share this with you as I'm quite disgusted.

I had a lot of clubcard vouchers and thought I'd use them for my holiday car rental. I checked it out online and when I went to book via the Tesco number the price changed from £168 to £210, this was a straight like for like quote. I couldn't believe it they did agree to reduce the cost but I haven't gone ahead in the end as you must book 21 days before you need the vehicle.

I can't believe that they exploit people like this.

  • When you pay for things via clubcard you always get charged the full rate, same with the holiday vouchers you can get from them. You won't get any special offer price or internet price quoted. It does tell you that on the Tesco website.
  • XL always charge you what price you see on their website, whether it be a special offer or not.

the price I was quoted wasn't a discounted price, the price the clubcard line wanted to charge was simply more expensive for no reason
  • thats still just over £50 in vouchers....bargain. I use Avis every time in Spain. Clean cars and car can be returned tank full so no ridiculous fuel charges.

We used our vouchers to hire a car from them recently. We got the car home ready to pack for our hols and we found there was a problem with the key. The alarm kept going off and the central locking didn't work. We rang them up, they were very apologetic and sent AA out to fix it straight away. Within an hour we were on our way.
When we returned it they said for the inconvenience we could have a free car for the weekend, a gift from their corporate brochure or £50. We took the £50 :p so we actually ended up getting paid to hire the car!! We'll definitely use them again, you can't grumble for £50 in vouchers really.

I seem to be alone in thinking that its digusting that when using clubcard vouchers to pay for avis they charge you more than the advertised rate for the same vehicle. I just thought it was worth warning people. Free money isn't free money when it costs more for the same item.

Quite right misspoppy, I am with you 100%. It is something that should be pounced upon by the OFT but won't be because the OFT are toothless wonders. So one of the useful alternative things we can do as consumers is to bring the matter here. I have generally found Avis expensive (used them twice I think in 33 years of driving!).

I've even stopped collecting Tesco Vouchers now because the best deal is long gone (an Annual Pass to the London Eye and several other major attractions for £40 in vouchers ... last seen about 5 years ago I think). I use a cashback card now instead of the Tesco Card.

When I lived nearby, some of the London Eye staff even knew our first names before the year was out! (mostly because Tesco and London Eye reneged on the deal part way through and then had to issue me with a special pass to put it right :p
