Stair carpet cost

I've been quoted £400 for carpet, underlay, etc plus £45 to fit.
It is for 2 flights of stairs, 12 steps on one and just 3 on the other, no landing as the landing is laminated floor.
Carpet is £8.99 per square m, underlay £9.99 per square m.

Does it sound resonance?

I've had my stairs carpeted, I sourced carpet, the guy sourced the underlay. Total was £85 for fitting and underlay. I paid about £100 for the carpet. Depends on quality of the material I think, fitting seems cheap enough?

underlay is very expensive for what you've been quoted, and the fitting seems very cheap. I got a quote recently for a stairs only too and the fitting was quoted at half the total price. Your quoted carpet price is cheap.


Question, I guess for you and others here. If the stairs is carpeted already, what's to prevent using the underlay that's there already? Relevant to you perhaps, but also (selfishly!!) to me as I'm planning on using the stuff that's down already. In fact I may even lay it myself, using the current carpet pieces (stairs curves a few times, hence multiple pieces) as template. Saving saving......

The carpet is on offer. Half price from carpet right.
Currently have no underlay so needed new ones.
I have been told I need 14 square meter carpet for the stairs only. Does that sound right?

Measure for your quantity.Take into consideration the width of carpet roll and add some waste.
Your underlay is far too expensive ,you also don't need it for the risers.
Ask carpetright for their quantities calculation.
Get a non 'Shed' price.

Carpetright is mentioned and all becomes clear!

Knowing carpetright they will have previously had the £8.99 per sq m carpet on at £18 per sq m, so they can then slash 50% off the cost, but it will be a £8.99 carpet.

They then gouge you on the underlay.

If you know the carpet type compare prices with an independent outlet.

If by any remote chance it is a heavyweight 80:20 wool/nylon mix carpet snap their hand off as £18 sq m is a typical entry level price for such a carpet and £8.99 is therefore a bargain.

Carpetright is where I went for my quote also and when I refused underlay as there was some down already with my current carpet they were aghast and gave me some fluff about not being able to reuse it. I like my local Carpetright as they were very helpful to me re flooring and sourcing electrician and decorator when I moved to the area first, but they are all about the hard sell. There's no good reason why I can't reuse the underlay, and the automatically assume that you want fitting. I guess that's natural but the price they charge is ridiculous. If you consider what you'd pay a qualified tradesman of any trade for a day, then what Carpetright charge, it's daylight robbery! And the price that they charge for the underlay is daft too. I've compared the price for underlay for laminate flooring there to that available (for same substance) in B&Q and there was a good price difference.

Underlay can be bought cheaper online. When we carpeted our house, I bought the underlay and grippers online (the carpet fitter still fitted it) and then spent some of the extra money I'd saved on better quality carpet.

There is no chance way that I would pay more for my underlay than the carpet.
