If you have carpets a upright vacuum cleaner is better. If you have wood /tiled floor a cylinder vacuum cleaner is best
I have carpets and have a Sebo which is a bit more than £200 but they are great vacuum cleaners and last for years.

Carpets: upright. Hard floor: drag along (whatever they are called).0

I just bought my mother a Gtech twin pack at £299.

She loves them. You can probably find the pair second hand on Ebay within your budget. My upright only was £130 about a year ago.0 -
Miele C3 is around that mark, really quiet, powerful and has a very long cord, I can do a 3 bed house from plugging it in the hall, it is bagged.#JusticeForGrenfell0

I like our Gtech AirRam ought so it's light for me to use, but having long haired dogs, we still need a normal upright.
We used to have Panasonic uprights, but the last one didn't last long and the Electrolux (a prototype which was based on a another model but never widely produced) lasted for even less time.
The present upright is a cheap Hoover, which came with a free hand held, from Makro and is about 6 years old.0 -
Any thoughts on a dyson?0

My dad (appliance technician for 20 years) used to rate them when they were made in the UK, not so much now.
If you want reliable, miele is right up there, we have one (s8 cat and dog), mother in law has one and my dad does. Can't recommend them highly enough0 -
How about an old skool Vax, pretty cheap at £90, they can handle liquids and carpet cleaning:

I have 2 dyson animals - his and hers! They are the older model and fantastic at picking up from all floor types. They are quite heavy though, but we have a bungalow so no stairs. Friends have dyson ball types which they love. Not sure how much they are now though.0

If you have allergies make sure you get one with a proper, replaceable (not washable) HEPA filter.
Also regardless of whether you have allergies look at the "Dust re-emission" on the EU label. Some vaccums have a very bad rating. I bought a Bosch vaccum because it had an A rating for dust re-emission and a proper HEPA filter. (BGL4ALLGB)Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
