Apparently, the scaremongering is based on a few organisations pointing out that although there is no need to display a disc at all, the penalty for displaying an out of date disc has not been removed.

Like I said, after about 12 months of being nagged (logic and "pchaa, what rubbish!!" do NOT defeat nagging BTW), I got around to removing it. Probably take another 12 months to remember to replace it with a reminder.

I still get the reminder anyway, as I pay yearly via t'interweb and need the number. No way do they get a direct debit out of me.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • If they send you an £80 fine you just tell them you put the SORN notification in the post even though you weren't really SORNing. They can't prove otherwise.

I thought the old offence was for not displaying a current disc.

Could well be, like I said I eventually decided to be "the wise reed who bends in the wind" rather than keep sticking up and get snapped off over having to clean a sticky smear off the windscreen :D

A poster on another forum did not get a reminder and received a £80 penalty notice.

They say it's a deliberate DVLA scam. Surely not!

I don't get a reminder for my MOT, I write it down on a calender and other things in case it ts lost in the post[

You can also use the number on the V5C.

Just a quick update, the tax has automatically renewed so no panic for another year.

It's surprising the amount of cars I still see about with year+ out of date discs in the window.

I like the naked feeling with absolutely nothing stuck in my windows.

The requirement to display the licence etc. - s.33, Vehicles Excise & Registration Act 1994, was abolished by sch. 19, Finance Act 2014.

There was no penalty for displaying an out of date licence, only for not displaying a current one. There was the power for regulations prohibiting the display of anything that could be mistaken for a current licence, but that was part of s.33.
