Hi, always had old cars so services by friend or halfords so never had experience of service at dealers.

Recently bought 14 plate ford and gave for service at 25000k. Apart from oil i brake fluid they did nothing else! Oh smuged my windows with filthy cloth so I had to clean them myself afterwards and filled my screenwash with water! When questioned about water they said it is standard procedure...

My question is....is it? Is service at dealers always sooo bad and limited?

Use the for Etis site to see the service schedule for your car. There you will be able to see exactly what should be done for each service.

To be honest some garages/dealers will be better than others. If you don't like the service at a certain dealer try another one.

The car has done 25,000,000 miles in two years and all they did was change the washer fluid!!! I suspect you meant 25 K and, as posted above, you should be able to check what has to be done in your service book against what was printed on your bill/invoice/service schedule.

    Yes sorry, 25k.
As the warranty expires next year I think I will go back to old servicing habits...

    Thank you for replies.

These days , many cars service schedules are little more than an annual oil change, brake fluid every couple of years and a visual check on everything else.

The will have done exactly what the schedule tells them to.

My Ford dealers do a very nice wash and valet though .... (and collect the car and deliver it back to me).

imho there should be at least 3 oil changes with regular fully synthetic oil, but more and more car manufaturers seem to be pushing long life oil with 30K mile service.

There was a video on youtube on a 1.8T golf that only did longlife oil changes to spec and the head was full of dried up oil residue.

I would also do brake fluid (and pad & disc inspection), air filter, oil filter, cabin filter.

Heck te fluids are so cheap I do the gear oil change, fuel filter change, power steering fluid change as well. They are inexpensive and not really service items. They will prolong the life of the car and not cost much.

Though some of the newer cars have very complex gear/transmission oil servicing.

I've recently appreciated the value of good lube. I used sewing machine oil in my air riveter and it got cummed up and seized. I had to strip it down, and clean it out grease with proper airline oil and then the riveter went back to normal operation, smooth a flawless operation.

to me, sewing oil and airline oil was similar, in fact sewing oil was more expensive so I thought it would be better. But oils have very unique qualities and you must use proper oil.

IMHO I would trust 3 changes of standard fully synthetic oil over 1 span of longlife oil.

I can see why longlife oil was invented though, back in the 80's and 90s cars were volatile and car owners had to work on their cars constantly and tinker with them. before every long journey there was a laboured process of checking over everything meticulously. Now cars are much more reliable, people wont even bother to check their tyres before heading out on a 400 mile journey. SOme people do 30-40k miles pa

Which manufacturers have service intervals as long as 30k miles?

Service intervals on all recent Fords I have had anything to do with have been 12500 or 12months.

There isn't really much maintenance to do on modern cars though, it is pretty much filters and fluids. Even Cambelts are often only changed at well over 100k miles. 112k on the 3.0tdv6 engines fitted to JLR and PSA vehicles and since around 07/08 150k of Ford/Volvo 2.0 diesels (don't know what the interval is on PSA group vehicles fitted with the same engine.)

DSG autos do indeed seem to require regular servicing unlike older Torque Convertor autos which can have intervals of 70/80k, I ignore any claims of "Filled for Life" by car makers, specifically ZF boxes which I have some experience with.

I have changed the oil at roughly half manufacturers interval for years.

I always use quality oil and I have never had any issues with turbos, sludge or indeed have an engine wear out or require significant repairs.

It does help that tinkering with cars is a bit of a hobby/pastime.

Not sure if you really meant to put this, must be my smutty mind but thanks to this my monitor is now covered in coffee....

I do agree with the principle of regular oil changes though. Both my cars could be on long life but I'd much prefer to change every 10k to ensure engine keeps running long term.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
