I know nothing about the legalities of all this. But I sat here wondering what it must be like to work for a company that thought it was acceptable to penalise someone for being upset at their spouse's death & refer to any absence from work after that as lack of work ethic. Personally, I would want to be out of there as soon as was financially viable.

You have given a financially viable alternative to continuing to work for them. Get out now, move on from them. You MAY even give someone who has no alternative the chance to continue providing for their family. Frankly I think the future 'you' will live to thank them for giving you a "get free" card.

Whatever you decide - good luck!

When do you get your pension? If its only nine years could you stack shelves in Tesco?
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

My husband also works for Tata in a different location, we were under the impression that the pension cannot be taken until age 65. Maybe we have misunderstood. Hope you get the result you want,

I can transfer out of the BS pension and into a private pension then draw down on it from 55. I've had a projection of 5% therefore giving me around £7.5k a year. I know it's not as good as leaving it in there but I'd rather have that plus the rental on a property plus my widowers pension etc.

I have decided to tell them I no longer want the appeal to go any further, hopefully my union rep will sort that out first thing Tuesday morning.

My next quest will be looking for a property to rent and all the guidelines that will be involved in that.

    Thanks all

Faced with your figures I'd leave. If you wait and the plant closes then there will a huge amount of people also looking for work. Leave now with the extra 20k rather than have the stress of seeing what happens - its unlikely that offer will increase and you could be worse off if they bring in salary cuts for instance, or reduce shifts.

    Good luck!

I am officially out of the door. I did go in on Tuesday so that they would make the decision for me, they upheld their decision. No surprise there. My last day will be June 25th, this after 25 years of loyal service to them. I'd rather take my chances against 750 people as opposed to possible 5000+ looking for the same job.

It's just a pity that the management are so slack that they failed to inform me of a jobs fair, CV writing skills course, interview techniques etc all going on in the workplace for the last month. It has all finished now so I have missed a huge opportunity to gain some help, that's just typical of them to be honest.

Things are not looking good for the whole industry at the moment and some of the managerial decisions we see on a daily basis, I'm not surprised. Also to say we are 'Top heavy' would be a massive understatement.
I am waiting for advice as to get my pension pot transferred out before that goes the same way as Tata is heading, this way I can at least get some access to it in 3 1/2 years time.

Well it was probably the best idea to cut your losses while you could. I hope all your plans work out. Good luck
