The original American Express card

Options
Just wondering how many of you have the original American Express charge card?

How do you find the rewards programme?

Thanks

Charge card may be a pertinent hint - The original Amex was never a credit card, so not of this forum!

That's more picky than it needs to be - where do you suggest would be a better place for the thread than here?

Sorry OP, can't answer your question as I got rid of my Amex charge card years ago. I did work for a while on the coding of their Rewards system but that was over 20 years ago so I have no idea whether that is still in place.

Couldnt really say about the charge card however the credit card rewards are brilliant especially the hotel/flight cashbacks and lounge access

Original? I'm not old enough to hold the original but I do hold a Gold and Platinum card with AMEX.

Membership rewards is good, for what I use it for I love it as for the UK Gold I earn 1 MR per £1 spent, 2 MR per £1 spent with airlines, I usually transfer my MR to Emirates, Eurostar or Hilton. With the Euro Platinum I earn 1 MR per 1€ spent but I get lounge access, elite status with hotels and top level travel insurance.

If you put through a lot of money per month and pay it off each month then the AMEX is for you however if you don't then you need to establish if the fee is worth it for you.

Budgeting and Bank Accounts would suit the charge card model far better IMO.
  • Yea, I thought the first reply was a bit picky too, however, thanks to the rest of you for your response.

Was thinking of the Gold one also as the first year is fee free, although after that it goes up to a whopping £140 per year!

Even the original is a bit steep at £60 per year though if the reward were worth it, which they could be, it might be worth a shot. And yes, I pay of my "credit" cards at the end of each month anyway so a "charge" card would be fine...

I respect your opinion but disagree with it. In many ways an Amex charge card is closer to credit card than debit card, in that there is no direct link to a bank account and payment for transactions is only made at a later date.

I have the gold one, to be honest I don't use it much.

The reason being, that what message is it sending to others.

    1) You are trying to look like you have lots of money.

    2) You don't have lots of money because you don't have the centurion.

Yes, I would say it is worth the fee, and I think the first year is free and/or you get extra bonus points depending on your spend. If you use it for travel especially, but for day-to-day spend it is worth the fee imho.

Not sure what people mean about trying to look like you have lots of money/not enough money as in most places I use any card these days they dont even notice what card you are using, unless the shop dont accept amex and they have to look at the card to figure out that this is the reason for the problem with payment.

I think you would have to be waving the card in peoples faces otherwise for them to notice.
