Sounds like a plan. Get the Lloyds and stick to it for a while - say, 6 months. Then, apply for an Amex as you say (directly through them). Cancel the Lloyds and starts building a history with Amex. Simples.

With limited credit history Amex were unlikely to accept you for any product.

Bear in mind the gold card is a charge card not a credit card. For the reward points to be worthwhile you need to be spending a fair bit as after year one a fee applies. No point in having £100 worth of reward points when you're paying £140 in fees.
